BLAKE CARRUTHERS

As a student-athlete, Blake found success both on the field and in the classroom. In high school he excelled in mathematics and calculus, maintaining a top of class grade point average while committing his extra-curricular time to football and baseball.

Blake was a starting cornerback for the inaugural Centennial High School football team, tallying three interceptions all returned for touchdowns in his senior year. In the same year he was named to the City All-Star team and helped the Coyotes go 9-0, claiming a second city championship in three years.

However, baseball was Blake’s true passion and his decision to attend university was partially influenced by his lifelong goal to pursue a professional baseball career. As a freshman in 2008, he was a member of the NCAA Division II Wildcats baseball team at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA where he finished his first year with a 4.0 GPA. For personal and financial reasons, Blake decided to continue his baseball and university career within Canada, eventually switching his major from Education to Mathematics.

In the summer of 2009, Blake had the chance to play for Team BC at the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, BC. Notable teams included Team Canada as well as Team USA with the likes of Gerrit Cole, Drew Pomeranz, Christian Colon, Yasmani Grandal and Kolten Wong on the roster. As a result of his performance in the tournament, Blake was recruited by Terry McKaig, head coach of Team Canada and the UBC Thunderbirds.

The University of British Columbia was a perfect fit for Blake who enthusiastically embraced both elements of the student-athlete experience. Not only did he receive attention from major league scouts for his athletic ability in centerfield, but he was also recognized as top of his class academically and was offered membership into the Golden Key Honour Society.

In the summer of 2010, Blake was selected as a member of the Senior Men's Canadian National Team to play in the FISU World University Baseball Championship in Tokyo, Japan. The team went 3-2 and Blake had the chance to face Sri Lanka, China, Korea, Chinese Taipei and once again the talented Team USA. In his four years of study at UBC, Blake received a number of awards for his academic and athletic achievements, graduating with a 3.75 GPA, a B.A. in Mathematics and a solid university baseball career.
